Move to Zero is Nike’s Journey towards zero carbon and zero waste to help protect the future of sports as we know them. An average of 1 billion plastic bottles are diverted from landfills each year and transformed into recycled polyester for Nike footwear and apparel. The plastic bottles are cleaned, shredded into flakes and converted into pellets. From there, the pellets are spun into high-quality yarn used in their products. Using recycled polyester not only takes the plastic out of landfills but it also cuts carbon emissions by up to 30% compared to virgin polyester.

Similarly, materials like nylon and cotton are recycled from goods that would usually wind up in landfills and spun into yarn in order to be used for Nike products in this initiative. Nike Move to Zero products use organic and recycled cotton sourced from the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI). They have sourced materials from more conscientious places without risking the quality that Nike is known for.

Since 2008, all Nike Air soles are composed of at least 50% recycled manufacturing waste. Nike reuses more than 90% of the waste from materials used for the Air soles to make new, innovative cushioning systems. Additionally, as of 2020, all of Nike Air’s Manufacturing Innovation facilities in North America are powered by 100% renewable wind energy. These sneakers are light on your feet and light on waste.

The Nike Flyknit is precision engineered in order to reduce waste by 60% compared to traditional footwear upper fabrication. The simplicity of Nike Flyknit means that there are fewer parts involved in the construction of the shoe, resulting in a smaller carbon footprint than traditional footwear manufacturing. Each shoe upper is made with recycled polyester Nike Flyknit yarn contains an average of six to seven recycled plastic bottles.

Nike Flyleather looks, feels and smells like full-grain leather, and is made with at least 50% recycled leather fiber combined with synthetic materials using a water-powered process. Nike Flyleather has a lower impact on climate change compared to traditional full-grained leather. Nike is resourceful in their pursuit of lowering the amount of waste in the shoe making process.
