The extra wide size gave me plenty of room to wiggle my toes. Also, my feet usually swell a little bit when they get hot, and since these shoes are extra wide they did not become tight and uncomfortable. I wear them to walk the dog, and I've worn them while walking all over Europe. They're great. I recently broke my toe, so thought I'd try a wide width pair because of swelling. They're still the wonderful shoes I love in regular width, but were about a half size too big (I got the 6W). I'm exchanging them for 5.5W and hopefully they'll do the trick.
